College Counseling

We understand that the college search can strike a nervous chord in students and parents alike. At Wakefield School, we are determined to minimize the stress inherent in this sometimes daunting process and maximize the excitement.

The student-centered college counseling program begins in eighth grade and follows each student through to college acceptance. We ask students to evaluate their individual talents, skills, and interests. And we help them stay upbeat and on track as they tackle completing applications, writing personal essays, and ultimately, finding the best college match.

For their part, parents assume the role of supportive, realistic advisers. We welcome parental involvement as students prepare for standardized tests, explore career interests, and, as juniors, visit campuses as a group. Our dedicated college counselor sets the itinerary for the junior class college tour, accompanying students to a diverse group of colleges — large and small, urban and rural, prominent and lesser-known — across the Mid-Atlantic, New England, and Ohio Valley regions.

The end result is that typically more than 98% of our seniors gain admission to one of their top two campus picks." (Mr. McDonough)
