A Game to Remember
By Assistant Coach Ben Mason
On Wednesday March 1st, the #4 ranked Wakefield Fighting Owls took on the #5 ranked Christ Chapel Academy Lions in the VISAA State Quarter-Finals at Wakefield school. In this high energy, high stakes game, the Owls were led by Senior Guard Jaycee Drakeford's 19 points and 4 steals and were supported by Freshman Guard Kaleb Torrence's 16 points and 7 assists. At one desperate moment in the game, the Owls were down by 17 point and rallied all the way back to take the lead at 60-59 with 4.3 seconds left. During the last play of the game, Christ Chapel was able to score just as the horn sounded; ending the Owls' season with a 61-60 loss. Our Fighting Owls finished 20-5 this season. Coach Joe Harrington states, "I am so very proud of our team and the Wakefield students who energized our team to come back from 17 points down, to then go on an 18-0 run, and nearly win one of the best games in Wakefield history. Returning players have already set their 2017-18 goal... to win the State Championship!"
Team Captain, Avery Morton, '18, notes, "This final game of the season was definitely a game to remember. It showed how close we were as a team by the way that we all came together and put in a great effort to come back from a 17 point deficit. I had the most fun I've had all season in that final game. I could see the fight in my teammates eyes who were never willing to give up. It was fun to see their smiles grow more and more as we gradually came back. When the crowd started to believe in us, that really made us want to leave our hearts on the court, so we gave it our best shot."
We would like to thank our seniors Jaycee Drakeford, Colby Weeks and Micah Holmes for everything they accomplished and assisted with this season. We would also like to thank Mr. Colon, the faculty and staff, the students and everyone in the Wakefield community for your support this season. We couldn't have done it without you.
