Wakefield School Supports Haitian Relief Project

January 28, 2010

Since the earthquake disaster struck Haiti two weeks ago, Wakefield School has very generously responded to requests to support the Service Club's Haitian Relief Project. Boxes are strategically placed around the school to collect items such as toiletries, shoes, pots and pans, lightweight clothing, towels, etc. The great thing is that as these boxes are cleared out, they just fill up again! Old, but still usable suitcases and dufflebags have been donated to transport medical supplies and hygiene products to Haiti as the medical teams fly to Haiti to work amongst those impacted by this disaster. Cash and check donations to Medical Missionaries, the organization with which the Service Club has been working, have totaled over $1000 so far, and that amount does not include the many donations made directly to the Medical Missionaries website at www.medmissionaries.org. I have received requests to help in our support of Medical Missionaries from even an alumna who is involving various clubs and fraternities on her college campus to support our efforts, and Wakefield parents who have involved their local churches or neighbors. The support at the Wakefield/Highland basketball game on Saturday alone brought in $768 in monetary donations as well as a carload of other donations.

The Wakefield community is to be commended for its overwhelming support and generosity for a very worthy cause. Boxes will remain on the campus for weeks to come as the problems in Haiti will not be resolved in the short run. Any questions can be directed to me, Carolyn Wyrsch, or 540-253-7575.
