Q

What is Wakefield School known for?

A

We pride ourselves on being dedicated to a truly traditional liberal arts education and to keeping our mission at the center of school experience. Liberal arts education does not mean that we specialize in humanities, though our students are very strong in those areas. Rather it means that we revere knowledge in all disciplines and embrace the ways in which those disciplines are intertwined and mutually important. A strong knowledge of math and science are equally important to making sense of the way the world works as is a firm grasp of history. Our mission states that our vision is to develop capable, ethical, and articulate citizens. One of the many ways that we achieve this is by offering an interdisciplinary composition course, beginning in the fourth grade. The purpose of this course is to help students discover and master the skills of written communication whether the topic is scientific or historic, critical or analytical. Effective communication is a key component to success in life regardless of discipline.

Q

I have heard that Wakefield is very academic; what are the opportunities for extra-curricular activities?

A

Opportunities abound for extra-curricular involvement at Wakefield. We have two periods each week set aside for students in the Middle and Upper School to take part in campus activities including intramural sports, Citizen Series, and other traditional ones such as service club, Model UN, pop quiz, chess club, spirit club, and many more. In addition there is an active student government in the Upper School comprised of representatives from each grade and led by a president, vice president, and secretary treasurer from the senior class. Finally, the vast majority of students participate in athletics and drama after school during at least one season. Students manage the lighting, sound, and set construction, as well as the acting (of course!) for each of the plays, which are not to be missed. Visit the Arts for more information. Our 33 athletic teams in the Middle and Upper School are very competitive in the Delaney Athletic Conference as well as the Cavalier Athletic Conference. Please visit the Athletics portion of the website for the most up-to-date information on their success. Do not miss the chance to read our online student newspaper, Noctua, which is another wonderful insight into our community. In the Lower School students also take advantage of co-curricular and extra-curricular activities. Beginning in pre-kindergarten they have library, art, music, computer, PE, and foreign language each at least once a week. In addition there are active Cub Scout and Girl Scout troops that meet at school in the afternoon. Throughout the year there are also optional after school activities that take place including: nature camp, sampler making, tap and jazz, and cardio for kids. All Lower School students will perform before audiences multiple times throughout the year at events such as Grandparents Day, Lower School graduation, the 1st and 2nd grade concert, and the 3rd grade play.
